Surry Hills set for sweeping change as Wunderlich Lane is revealed

Sydney’s impressive growth spurt continues in the coming months with a brand new precinct, Wunderlich Lane, wedged between Redfern and Surry Hills.

Before the final curtain closes on 2024, Wunderlich Lane will rise up as one of Sydney’s most transformative and exciting lifestyle precincts with a slick new boutique hotel and a broad strip of restaurants from some big local players.

Named for the three Wunderlich brothers who opened a factory in the area during the early 20th Century, producing much of the country’s red terracotta roof tiles, the precinct has been one of the most talked about developments in Sydney all year. Now we’re on the cusp of watching it unfold, aligning with big projects like the Sydney Metro to bring our city into its next phase.

Stalwart property developer TOGA Group is behind the new project, which has been hyped all year with news that TFE Hotels will be opening 102-room boutique hotel The Eve with a rooftop bar and restaurant by Liquid & Larger (the same crew behind Bistecca and The Gidley).

Joining the Eve Hotel will be Olympus, a 200-seat Athenian restaurant from the team behind Potts Point favourites The Apollo and Cho Cho San, as well as Regina La Pizzeria from the masterminds of Pyrmont’s experimental LuMi Dining. The latter, a modern pizzeria, will be helmed by Matteo Ernandes who is best known for this pie-flipping skills at Da Orazio and Matteo Double Bay.

That’s far from all. House Made Hospitality (Grana and Lana) have signed up Island Radio, a tropical diner with South-East Asian flavours, as well as Baptist Street Rec Club, a cocktail and wine bar inspired by 80s Australiana culture. Joining them will be—to absolutely no one’s surprise—Gelato Messina, an upscale omakase restaurant from Japanese chef Raita Noda, and a bevy of beauty and lifestyle retailers including a day spa from The Parlour Room. Local homeware favourites Saardé will also be opening their very first flagship store as part of the precinct.

Wunderlich Lane will be completed by the end of 2024 with the Eve Hotel opening in November.
