What is Manon?

This autumn, ballet lovers are invited to experience one of the most poignant and powerful productions in the classical repertoire, Manon, presented by The Australian Ballet. Running until 17 May 2025 at the iconic Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House, this extraordinary performance brings to life Sir Kenneth MacMillanโ€™s celebrated interpretation of Abbรฉ Prรฉvostโ€™s timeless 18th-century novel.

A Tragic Love Story Told Through Dance

Set against the lavish salons of Parisian high society and the raw streets of New Orleans, Manon explores the devastating consequences of ambition, temptation and love. Love or money? It’s an age-old question. At the heart of the story is the young and beautiful Manon, torn between her passionate love for the poor student Des Grieux and the seductive allure of wealth and luxury.

This is no ordinary fairytale though. Manon is a powerful narrative ballet where love and tragedy collide in heartbreaking fashion. Emotionally charged choreography is paired with Jules Massenetโ€™s hauntingly beautiful score (orchestrated by Martin Yates) and elegant set and costume designs by Peter Farmer, making for a deeply moving evening at the theatre.

A Masterpiece in The Australian Balletโ€™s Repertoire

First staged in 1974 at Londonโ€™s Royal Opera House, it has become one of MacMillanโ€™s most revered works. The Australian Ballet introduced it to its repertoire in 1994, last performing it in 2014, and its long-awaited return in 2025 promises to captivate both long-time enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Why You Should See Manon

Whether you’re a seasoned ballet-goer or curious newcomer, Manon is a must-see for 2025. This production is a masterclass in storytelling through danceโ€”gritty, passionate and unforgettable. With its emotional depth, breathtaking choreography, and stunning visuals, Manon stands as a testament to the enduring power of ballet to move and provoke.

Book your seats now and witness this devastatingly beautiful ballet performed live by The Australian Ballet, Australiaโ€™s premier dance company.
