Titanique will float your boat as the funniest musical in Sydney

It’s certainly overboard. And at times, skating on thin ice. But if you love slap-stick, camp musicals – and Celine Dion! – this show will definitely float your boat.

It’s playing at the Grand Electric Theatre in Surry Hills  –  and we hope it finds another venue for a longer voyage.

What is Titanique about? Great question.

Here’s the producer’s synopsis: “When the music of Céline Dion makes sweet Canadian love with the eleven-time Oscar-winning film Titanic, you get Titanique, a musical celebration that turns one of the greatest love stories of all time into a hysterical and joyful slay-fest.”

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The plot line sounds just as unlikely: Celine Dion interrupts a Titanic museum tour claiming she was on board the ship when it hit an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage.

But no description of what this madly joyous show is about can really convey this musical. Just dive in – the humour is unsinkable.

Titanique at the Grand Electric, Surry Hills

The show is a hilarious parody of both the singer, who this year took the Paris Olympics by storm, and the movie that was one of the highest grossing films of all time. It won 11 Oscars for director James Cameron -and who can forget Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s “Titanic moment” on the bows of the ship?

It was written by Tye Blue (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Marla Mindelle and Constantine Rousouli, and opened off Broadway in 2022. It received rave reviews and become an extraordinary splash smash, and has travelled the world.

The Michael Cassel Group has brought this irreverent but hopelessly funny show to Australia with a terrific cast led by Marney McQueen as Celine Dion, Georgina Hopson as Rose Dewitt-Bukater and Drew Weston as Jack Dawson.

Abu Kebe plays The Iceberg, Tina Turner AND a Seaman.  And watch out for a strong singing performance from Abigail Dixon as Molly Brown.

The show features some of the classic hits: My Heart Will Go On, All By Myself, and To Love You More. You’ll be amazed that just four musicians tackle the orchestral score.
