‘Titanique’, New York’s hilarious Celine Dion-themed hit musical, is coming to Sydney

Producers Michael Cassel and Eva Price are bringing New York’s irreverent, Celine Dion-themed Titanique to Sydney this September.

The much-lauded production will play at Surry Hills’ intimate The Grand Electric on Cleveland Street, just a short walk from Central Station.

Considering it’s fast becoming the world’s hottest musical, this Titanic-inspired production could not arrive at a better time. After a few years of dominating Manhattan, the show is fanning out to Toronto, Montreal and London, signalling the feverish level of global demand often reserved for headline musicals like Hamilton and Chicago.

Titanique has been most noted for its irreverent sense of humour and fiercely self-aware satire of the classic 90s blockbuster, fuelled by the music of Celine Dion to double as a homage to the iconic French-Canadian chanteuse.

Being reshaped for The Grand Electric is exciting for Sydney’s art scene, given it’s fast become one of the city’s most interesting performance arts venues, imbued with the vintage glamour of Hollywood. The venue is currently hosting the final run of high-octane variety show LIMBO – The Return and has some of the most interesting programming in the city.

Music theatre and cabaret legend Marney McQueen headlines the cast as Celine Dion, while Drew Weston steps into the role of Jack Dawson, Georgina Hopson portrays Rose Dewii Bukater, and Matt Lee becomes Victor Garber. They will be joined by a reliable cast of local greats including Stephen Anderson, Keane Sheppard-Fletcher, Abigail Dixon, Abu Kebe, Artemis Alfonzetti, Jo-Anne Jackson, Jenni Little, Trent Owers, Matthew Predny and Tyran Stig.

Reviews have deemed Titanique slightly more hysterical and playful than your usual musical, reimagining what “really” happened to Jack and Rose on the night the Titanic kissed that fateful iceberg. These kinds of nostalgic, campy musicals are bread-and-butter for Sydney year-round so we wouldn’t be surprised to see tickets, which are now available, snapped up in a heartbeat.

“We know how much Sydney loves a great night out and unabashed escapism, and Titanique is the perfect show for both of those things,” said Price.

“We can’t wait to share this side-splittingly funny show with audiences here in an exciting new venue and give you the most incredible take on Celine Dion and Titanic you have ever seen.”
