Sydney’s game-changing metro line hit with another delay

Sydney’s new super-fast metro network was set to start carrying passengers this Sunday, August 4, but another slight delay has reared its head due to incomplete safety checks.

As reported earlier this month, the underground Sydney metro will be a brand-new service designed to change how locals and visitors navigate our beautiful city.

The first sections of the new railways were revealed in 2023, with the next step being a full-service timetable making areas like Chatswood and Sydenham more accessible for locals and tourists.

Not only will this project be the biggest shakeup of our city’s public transport system in history, and necessitate the construction of new affordable housing, but it will also transform the way we engage with Sydney’s arts and cultural offerings in areas such as Walsh Bay.

For example, imagine a city worker from Martin Place could zip straight to Barangaroo and walk to Walsh Bay’s arts precinct after they clock off, ensuring more people can easily engage with venues like Bangarra Dance Theatre, as well as Barangaroo’s swathe of restaurants.

The Office of National Rail Safety Regulator has not yet signed off on the safety checks required for the Sydney metro to begin. This cans the planned start date of August 4, which has been reportedly pushed back for at least a week.

No new start date has been confirmed for the Sydney metro, which is worth a whopping $21.6 billion and promises to significantly shave time for commuters. The project will also include new Metro stations for stops like Barangaroo and North Sydney’s Victoria Cross, likely spurring a whirlwind of new development and lifestyle precincts around the city.

I guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer for Sydney’s radical transformation. Sydney Travel Guide will keep you updated as the project progresses.
