Sydney has been ranked as the best “winter sun hotspot” in the world. That is, the harbour city has the best warm weather during winter, according to a new report from luggage company Bounce.

The report has Sydney outperforming all when it comes to average temperature, rainfall, nightly price and various search terms for “winter.” At least those were the factors that Bounce analysed in order to determine a “winter sun score” out of ten. Sydney scored 6.45, putting it in joint first place with another Aussie capital, Darwin.

Considering we can still manage beach weather during winter, we tend to agree with the results. Our world-class rooftop bars, comfortable climate and sunshine hours make our winter much more tolerable compared to some of other cities around Australia.

Broome is the only other Australian city to be included in the top ten, with this list jumping all over the globe from Phuket and Hanoi to Fuerteventura (part of Spain’s Canary Islands) and Siem Reap.

While Sydney scored higher than Darwin in sea temperatures, sunshine hours and things to do, Northern Territory’s capital outdid us when it comes to average nightly price. You can expect to pay around $160 AUD per night for a hotel in Darwin. In Sydney that figure would swell to an eye-watering $372 per night.
