A special choral homage to Broadway legends is coming to Sydney Town Hall

Across two exclusive nights, Sydney Town Hall will turn into an incredible celebration of Broadway legends driven by the powerful sounds of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

Australia’s largest choral organisation is best known for their annual concert series taking place in venues like Sydney Opera House and City Recital Hall. These performances, however, will be remarkably different as they celebrate the legendary musical partnership between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein.

The pair, who were responsible for the lion’s share of Broadway hits in the 1940s and 1950s, are household names for anyone who loves show tunes and classics like “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” These will form the backbone of this one-off Sydney Philharmonia Choirs project, which forms part of the organisations Showstoppers series and will bring a new life to these well-worn compositions.

Joining the choirs will be a host of Australia’s leading musical theatre stars to help bring these tunes to life. Ashleigh Rubernach, who was most recently seen on stage as part of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, will step onto the scene. As will the likes of multi-award-winning Johanna Allen, Daniel Belle, and Rob McDougall.

Stalwart choral conductor Brett Weymark will be holding baton as the full Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra comes together across these two nights.

“I am thrilled to bring this cracker of a concert to Sydney Town Hall, where my favourite things by Rodgets and Hammerstein will get a symphonic workout,” said Weymark.

“From the classic opening of the film version of The Sound of Music to the lesser-known Flower Drum Song, Showstoppers is an opportunity for Broadway fans to indulge that guilty pleasure, let their hair down, and tap their toes a little…or a lot.”

Showstoppers continues what the choirs started with their Golden Age of Broadway concert, which played as part of the Sydney Opera House’s 50th-anniversary celebrations in 2023 and was a sell-out season.
