You can now catch the Sydney Metro after midnight

We aren’t quite ready for a 24-7 train system, but we’re surely a step closer now that Sydney Metro has extended its service after a successful first month.

More than 190,000 Sydneysiders and tourists poured onto the forward-thinking new train line on the very first day. Now, a month later, Transport for NSW has announced an extension of the Sydney Metro opening hours with both increased frequency and more services.

The 15.5-kilometre M1, which links Chatswood and Sydenham has increased the number of weekly services by 49. That means there are now 434 services every Monday through Thursday, and 446 services on Friday.

And while this is great news for daily commuters and tourists arriving into Sydney at all hours of the day, it’s night owls that should be most excited. Starting from today, Sydney Metro trains will now run past midnight Friday through Saturday, while also starting earlier at each end.

The first southbound metro service of each day will leave Tallawong Station at 4:08am while the first northbound service leaves Sydenham at 4:54am.

Between Monday and Thursday, the last train of the day will leave Tallawong at 11:50pm and Sydenham at 12:24am. Not quite the 24-7 service we were hoping for, but a step in the right direction.

On Fridays, the last train departing from Tallawong leaves 12:50am and at 12:48am on Saturdays, while the last trains from Sydenham leave at 1:24am on both nights. Welcome news for anyone staying out late at Sydney’s best nightclubs.

Sunday still has a curfew. The last train will depart Tallawong at 10:18pm and Sydenham at 10:54pm.

During peak hours on weekdays—10am-3pm—trains will run every five minutes thanks to the increased capacity, putting the M1 on par with some of the world’s most efficient train lines. Trains will arrive every ten minutes outside of those hours.
