Christmas Eve is generally the busiest day of the year for Blackwattle Bay’s iconic Sydney Fish Market. But April can be just as hectic.
The Friday before Easter alone will see around 50,000 people file through the markets, which will be shelling out more than 650 tonnes of seafood, including over 100 tonnes of prawns and around 1 million oysters.
The Easter Long Weekend rush is the last big occasion for Sydney Fish Market before its new incarnation is revealed later this year. And so the chaotic 12-hour stretch on Good Friday will be caked in nostalgia while mongers stack Sydney’s finest seafood to help homes supersize their Easter lunches.
As per tradition, the Good Friday Sydney Fish Market trading hours start before dawn, opening all doors at 5am. You’ll have up until 5pm to do your seafood shopping, with all of the market’s venues remaining open for the full 12 hours.
That said, the market is still open for the entire Easter Long Weekend, as per its normal trading hours of 7am – 4pm. So it’s not like you’ll be left in the lurch if you don’t take advantage of the longer Good Friday hours.
So, what’s happening with the new Sydney Fish Market?
Things aren’t looking good for the new Sydney Fish Market. Just a few weeks ago, news about another lengthy delay was released. Although the large rooftop canopy was officially completed in February, the project has hit a snag with one of the companies behind the construction entering voluntary administration.
Reports indicate that the project has already skyrocketed above its proposed budget. The largest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere was initially projected to cost $750 million, but current estimates place the cost at $836 million. Multiplex, a construction company managing the project, has already called for government support.
