  • Spicetown is a new hawker-style food hall in Leichhardt.

  • Spicetown joins Spice Alley in Chippendale and Hawker Lane in Chatswood as several vibrant food markets in Sydney.

Sydney may not have the bustling spread of hawker centres that’s propped up Singapore’s dining scene for years, but the playful, neon-lit Spicetown in Leichhardt is making a major case for more open-air food halls.

Spicetown was one of the focal points for the Western Sydney suburb of Sefton for years but is currently closed while the team make a move on their second location, right in the heart of Little Italy.

The playful, neon-lit food market has replaced the old Leichhardt Hotel in Norton Street with a technicolour frame complete with its own funhouse and old-world decor, splashing through everything from vintage Bollywood movie posters and Baroque features, to hawker-style stools and tables. It’s been a hit with locals so far, feeling like a set ripped straight from the streets of Hong Kong or Shanghai.

The Spicetown Leichhardt menu works similar to the Sefton original, with a night market-style spread of worldly cuisine that tracks Afghani, Korean, Turkish, Malaysian, Egyptian, Sudanese and more. Plus, there’s a fully-loaded mezzanine bar looking over it all, serving up beer and wine between all those street-style bites.

Spicetown should add plenty of weight to Leichhardt’s long-dormant nightlife and dining scene, especially now that the suburb is waiting to become one of the Special Entertainment Precincts that the City of Sydney are pushing to elevate Sydney’s night-time economy.

Spicetown now joins bustling food centres like Spice Alley in Chippendale and Hawker Lane in Chatswood to offer a different way to dine in Sydney, with the option to try a variety of things from different stalls in an eclectic atmosphere. Plus, street food is generally a much more affordable way to dine.
