Sculpture by the Sea: Everything you need to know about Sydney’s art trail

The annual Sculpture by the Sea is coming back to sandwich over 100 sculptures between Bondi and Tamarama from mid-October to early November.

Details for one of the world’s most beautiful art walks have been announced ahead of the 18-day run, which should see over 450,000 visitors head to the iconic Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk between October 18 and November 4.

The exhibition, the world’s largest free public outdoor sculpture exhibition, has locked in some big names for its 26th anniversary, including James Rogers, John Petrie, Stephen King (this one—not that one) and Paul Bacon. There will also be a heavy presence from Japanese artists like Haruyuki Uchida and Toshio Lezumi as well as 10 other leadings artists from all over the country.

Other big names exhibiting this year include Chen Weng Ling (China), Peter Lundeberg (USA) and David Cerny (Czech Republic).

In total, the program includes 35 artists exhibiting for the very first time at Sculpture by the Sea, including artists from Switzerland, China and the Ukraine. Given the festival always works hard to curate a diverse selection of artists from around the world, it’s looking like we’re about to get one of the trails biggest range to date, building on a legacy that’s shown love to artists from 51 countries across 2,650 sculptures.

Locals and visitors will be packing onto the 2km coastal walk, which has always been a vehicle for Australia’s leading sculptures to play around with size and scale, bringing out new dimensions to their work with the help of the coastal walk’s many natural features.

Note that a small part of the Coastal Walk will be closed this year between Bondi and Marks Park, due to a landslide that occurred a few months ago. Sculpture by the Sea has confirmed that the exhibition will be largely unaffected by the closure, but it has necessitated a few changes. Through each weekend there will now be a one-way system in place on the path at the Bondi end heading south.
