Is Sydney’s new $65 sandwich worth the splurge?

  • Katsu sando specialists Sandoitchi have teamed with one of Sydney’s best butchers for $65 Wagyu sandwich.
  • Anthony Puharich has added a special touch with one of the top cuts in Australia.
  • The sandwich is only available for a limited time.

Japanese-style sandwich purveyor Sandoitchi has teamed with stalwart butcher Anthony Puharich for a luxurious $65 sandwich that takes the fluffy creation to levels not previously seen in Sydney.

While some of Sydney’s best sandwich shops like Malibu and City Edge Cafe are keeping the art of carb-loading work lunches afloat, Sandoitchi has clearly decided that what this city needs is a sandwich so ludicrously expensive that it cuts out a decent chunk of renters and those barely staying afloat amongst a long-lingering cost-of-living crisis.

Elevating familiar classics with expensive ingredients isn’t anything new in Sydney, but it’s few and far between these days as businesses are looking for keep their costs low and make their money on volume.

A wagyu sandwich
Sandoitchi is only serving this $65 wagyu tenderloin sandwich for a limited time.

This new partnership heads in the opposite direction, going high with Vic’s Meat’s Puharich coming on board to lift Sandoitchi’s signature Wagyu sando with the purity of provenance. Order up one of the limited edition $65 sandwiches and you’ll get a 9 MBS+ Stone Axe fullblood wagyu tenderloin sandwich, taken from 500-day ration-fed cattle with Yakinuki sauce and spicy wasabi mayo, gently rested between a signature brioche roll.

The meat is often cited as the very best quality blood wagyu in Australia, so the eye-popping $65 price tag is fairly reasonable for something this deliciously decadent.

Is it worth the $65, though? Puharich has already claimed that it’s the best wagyu sandwich he has ever had, and given the respect he commands in the industry, there’s little doubt to the claim. It also looks like you get a fairly decent proportion of meat, which makes it just as valuable as getting a nice, mid-range steak at a steakhouse like The Gidley or Alfie’s.

Sandwiches can be purchased from Sandoitchi Cafe on Oxford Street (also in Chatswood Chase) for a limited time, offered on a special menu alongside a new $10 Wagyu fat chocolate mousse and fresh strawberry sandwich.
