Romance Was Born is hosting an art prom and you’re invited

Visionary designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales bring their fashion storytelling to life, turning the MCA’s Foundation Hall and Level 1 Galleries into a dreamscape of love, music, and art.

The duo behind Romance Was Born—known for their blend of fashion and art—are celebrating love in all its forms at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Australia. Whether it’s the intoxicating thrill of first love, the nostalgia of high school prom nights, or the steadfastness of long-term romance, this event will explore it all through a mix of performances, art installations, and live music. From wedding band covers to romantic serenades, the night promises a dreamy, whimsical atmosphere.

The evening will also offer exclusive after-hours access to two exhibitions on display: Isaac Julien’s Rapture and Julie Rrap’s Body Double. Against the backdrop of these artistic explorations of the human experience, Romance Was Born will craft an immersive celebration.

A Night for Lovers

As always with Romance Was Born, the guest list of performers is as creative as their runways. DJ Aunty Jonny will keep the dance floor electric, while Chakita’s Love Song Dedications offer modern serenades to set the mood. Montgomery’s ethereal synth-pop vocals will echo throughout the space, adding a layer of contemporary romance.

Artist Meagan Pelham will perform poetry, while drag sensation Hollywould Star will bring their signature flair to the event. Visual installations will also play a key role, with kaleidoscopic textile sculptures by Troy Emery and Kate Rohde transforming the venue into a romantic, multi-sensory wonderland.

Curators Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales have spent over two decades redefining what it means to tell stories through fashion. As the creative minds behind Romance Was Born, they’ve become known for their dreamy, avant-garde designs and immersive, artistic experiences. Their collaborations with renowned Australian artists like May Gibbs, Linda Jackson, and Del Kathryn Barton have made them a force to be reckoned with, both in the fashion and art worlds.

Their work has been recognised by the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia, and even graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

One Night Only

This 18+, one-night-only event will undoubtedly capture the imagination of Sydney’s art and fashion elite. With Romance Was Born at the helm, attendees can expect an evening full of playful surprises, whether you’re there for the art, the fashion, or simply the promise of romance.
