It’s no secret Sydney is now aggressively shifting its infrastructure, lifestyle and nightlife towards something that could put the Harbour City in line with tourism behemoths like Tokyo, London and New York City. The exciting reveal of the Sydney Metro made that much clear, alongside the many other new venues and features pushing this city into a new age.
But we’re still very far from achieving the NSW Government’s stated goal of $91 billion in annual visitor economy expenditure by 2035.
What would really pick up pace for us here is a brand new airport. And luckily, it’s been in the works for quite some time, with Western Sydney Airport (WSI) due to open by the end of 2026. It’ll be big. Qantas has already started firming up planes to get involved, as are Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, and, rumour has it, Vietnam Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. It’ll also operate around the clock, with a 24-hour capacity as opposed to Sydney Airport’s 11pm to 6am curfew.
Such an enormous project has given birth to a brand new CBD, Bradfield City, as well as necessitated an extension of the Sydney Metro which will connect Western Sydney Airport to St Marys.
Is the Western Sydney metro still being built?
Transport for NSW has reassured Sydney that this project is most definitely on track, even going so far as to release the proposed designs for the new metro stations that will serve as hubs for this new rapid 23-kilometre stretch of Sydney Metro.
Currently, viaducts are being built over farmland between Orchard Hills and Luddenham to help construct the spine of this railway, which has the reported capacity to ferry 7.740 passengers per hour between St Marys and Bradfield. This, however, will take even longer than the airport with a completion date set a year after the airport opens.
What will the new Sydney Metro stations look like?
In total, there will be six beautiful new Metro stations in Western Sydney. And from photos we can see that they’ll look vastly different from each other, assumedly with the same design-forward aesthetic as the more recently opened Sydney Metro stations like Barangaroo and Gadigal. This also means they’ll each function as unique art galleries as well, beautifying the day-to-day transit for locals and visitors.
Given the large success of the Sydney Metro to date, new Sydney Metro stations like Orchard Hills and Bradfield should be well-received when they open some time in 2027. For now, take a look at the renders and imagine how different transit in Western Sydney will be a few years from now.
For each station, Transport for NSW is consulting with First Nations design professionals, with plans to complement the local landscape with colours, textures and materials paying homage to the country.
