This Tony Award-winning ‘Peter Pan’ prequel is coming to Sydney

Peter and the Starcatcher, a five-time Tony Award-winning production that most famously ran on Broadway in 2012, has been locked in as the Capitol Theatre’s first major show for 2025.

Adapted from Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s eponymous novel, Peter and the Starcatchers seeks to tell the prequel story of Neverland long before the faraway place ever heard of Peter Pan, Captain Hook or even Wendy. In their place: a nameless boy, a pirate, and Wendy’s mother, Molly, spring to life a fantastical story that lays the groundwork for one of Disney’s most timeless tales.

A Dead Puppet Society, Glass Half Full Productions, JONES Theatrical Group and Damien Hewitt Production will bring this stage show to Sydney, joining the city’s love of Disney adaptations, which in the past few years have included successful seasons for Cinderella, Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast.

Created by Rick Elice, whose Water For Elephants is currently dominating Broadway, the stage show combined live music with technical wizardry and a dramatic 100 characters all coming together to blur the line between reality and fantasy. Composer Wayne Barker picked up a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play off the back of this production, and it was named a New York Times Critic’s Pick during its initial run in New York City.

Such acclaim isn’t taken lightly in a city as increasingly hungry for approachable stage shows as Sydney. It will arrive in the harbour city off the back of a shortened Melbourne season later this year, due to kick off 2025 alongside already confirmed big-ticket shows like The Lord of the Rings– A Musical Tale (State Theatre) and Wuthering Heights (Roslyn Packer Theatre).

The local cast will feature Peter Helliar, Colin Lane, Alison Whyte, Paul Capsis, Olivia Deeble and Otis Dhaji, presenting somewhat of an unexpected mixed bag that should add to the interest slowly building around the stage show. Remember, there’s 100 characters to take stock of set against fantastical set pieces that the producer’s are hoping will match up to Sydney’s rapidly rising standards.

Peter and the Starcatcher will play at the Capitol Theatre from January 31, 2025 to February 7, 2025.
