After a successful debut last year, Scenic World’s whimsical Blue Mountains light and sound walk is back just in time for the autumn school holidays.
The enchanting Nocturnal brings the region its own version of Vivid, propping up a new program of light displays, holograms and dynamic light structures, lifted by ambient sounds to create a forest walk that feels appropriately otherworldly.
Everything from a massive holographic lyrebird to elaborate projections of ancient rock formations help build up luminous paths that snake through the rainforest in all different directions. It’s one of the best school holiday activities for kids, taking the drive out to this majestic World Heritage-listed site and entering a glowing universe set under a sky full of stars.
Scenic World’s Nocturnal completely sold out last year, so this season has been extended from Thursday, April 3 to Saturday, May 11 (on select nights), expanding the program of light works that include pieces that are both interactive and educational, paying tribute to the secret language of trees, the unique landscape of Gundungurra Country, and Scenic World’s 80th anniversary.
To get the best experience, we recommend jumping onboard Scenic World’s iconic Scenic Railway, which will be running on select evenings during the light walk. Visitors also have access to the Scenic Skyway if they want a bird’s eye view of the multi-coloured tree tops.
“I always thought it would be amazing to be able to share the valley with people at night; and Nocturnal does just thatโwith moments of dazzling light and moments of total darkness,” said Scenic Worldโs Managing Director, Anthea Hammon when speaking about Nocturnal’s inaugural year with news.
“As you walk along the boardwalk, the interactive experience with lights and holograms takes you on a journey. Our Starlight installation will especially leave you feeling like you’re being transported somewhere else but with the sounds of the Jamison Valley at night still in your earsโit’s really something to be seen to be believed.”
Nocturnal is free for children under three while general admission for kids starts at $40.90. A child’s ticket also comes with a special “Nocturnal Quest” to turn the light walk into an engaging puzzle, where kids can uncover hidden clues to deepen their understanding of the Creation stories of Gundungurra land. Adults have to fork out a bit more, with big kid tickets starting from $54.90.
All tickets include rides on the Scenic Railway, Skyway and Cableway.
