Sydney's metro line will bring a brand new shopping precinct to Martin Place.

Despite several false starts, it’s looking like the Sydney metro line is either a few weeks—or a few months—away from its first trial run.

And with it, some brand new developments built to push this city further as a world-class destination for lifestyle, shopping, tourism, and events.

One such development that we’ve been keeping a close eye on is the ambitious new three-level retail and dining outlet built out of the rejigged Martin Place station, which is one of six new stations built to support this ambitious metro project.

It’s also the most significant, with Martin Place welcoming a new subterranean lifestyle precinct clocking in at 3,000 square metres with various shopping, dining and entertainment options for commuters and tourists alike. And it’ll all be located 25 metres beneath Sydney, complemented by several public artworks and hospitality concepts.

Martin Place has already been the focal point for many new developments over the past few years, including 25 Martin Place with award-winning restaurant AALIA, new bars like Caterpillar Club, and boutiques for some of the world’s most coveted luxury brands.

The transformation of Martin Place Plaza will add some significant weight to the financial district, featuring an underground shopper’s paradise of 600 specialty stores across three floors. With Myer and David Jones just a few blocks away at Pitt Street Mall, and numerous boutiques in between, this section of Sydney is doubling down on being both the home of business and high-end shopping.

“Fifty thousand people have worked on this project from start to finish, so the state-of-the-art station is a testament to their brilliant work,” said Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen, who also notes that Martin Place Metro will complement the existing T4 Eastern Suburbs and Ilawarra line, as well as make nearby bus services more accessible for commuters. An underground walkway stretching from Martin Place to nearby Hunter Street is also part of the development, unlocking areas of Sydney previously unconnected.
