Wine enthusiasts the world over are in for a boozy May as the Coravin World Wine Tour returns for its second year. And yes, Sydney is one of the premier stops, this year with Darlinghurst’s fabulous Love, Tilly Devine opening up its collection of 300 bottles (including some incredibly rare skin contact wines) so guests can try more by the glass, without having to commit to an entire bottle.

“By-the-glass” has become a calling cardโ€”and reasonable demandโ€”for wine enthusiasts the world over. It’s now a pre-requisite for a new restaurant or bar to have an extensive selection of wines by the glass, primarily so guests can try a great variety without committing to an expensive bottle for the night. The cost of livings acceleration this year has only made that more crucial.

The increasingly present Coravin, a simple wine preservation device, has meant sommeliers the world over have been more open to popping the top on some of those harder-to-find vintages and pricey varietals, translating to more varied by-the-glass lists, much to the benefit of both the venue and the customer.

More experimentation, better food and wine pairing, and a less wasteful approach to wine consumption are the benefits of this mechanical device, which has quite swiftly changed the game for wine lovers.

And so the Coravin World Wine Tour is now an exciting annual event for wine enthusiasts, flirting through some of the world’s biggest wine-drinking countries, including France, Italy and Australia. This year, Coravin is widening its Australian scope with concurrent stops in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Love, Tilly Devine, one of Sydney’s premier tiny wine bars, will be offering guests the rare chance to sip their way through the supersized cellar list by pairing a glass or two with dishes from a produce-forward menu of light bar snacks. Under usual circumstances, there’s typically around 13 wines offered by the glass here. For the festival, there will be closer to 300.

Prices for Love Tilly usually range from $16 to $24 for wines by the glass.

“It’s really going to, quite literally, open up the possibilities for our guests to try something new, and allow our team to open more and more of their favourite wines; some a little unusual, and all delicious,” said James Griffin of Love, Tilly Devine, whose particularly excited for people to be able to try the skin contact wines of Staffelter Hof, which is the world’s oldest working winery (nearly 1,200 years old).

“A new generation of wine drinkers are increasingly curious, adventurous, and willing to experiment with new varieties and styles,” offered Coravin Founder Greg Lambrecht. “Offering more wines by the glass allows drinks to find their new favourite variety, region, or style, without taking the risk of buying a whole bottle.”

The Coravin World Wine Tour kicks off on May 1 and runs through to May 31. Bookings to Love, Tilly Devine are recommended given that just about everyone with more than a casual interest in wine will be scrambling to find their new favourite.
