  • Free live music is on the cards for Sydney with 12 months of gigs planned each Wednesday night.
  • The Metro Theatre will switch themes every month starting with country in November and indie-pop in December.
  • Free cultural events are essential to help prop up Sydney’s night-time economy.

The Metro Theatre has introduced a year-long Artists in Residency program with free concerts every Wednesday.

While Sydneyโ€™s star is certainly rising when it comes to night-time activities, the Harbour City still has a long way to go to really step up to cities like New York City and Tokyo. A big missing piece: an abundance of free cultural events to keep things interesting throughout the week (and help alleviate the cost of living).

One of Sydneyโ€™s most iconic music venues, which has stood on the corner of George Street and Central Street since 1994, is leading the charge when it comes to quality free concerts. And we arenโ€™t talking cover bands youโ€™d see at the pub throughout the week either; these are free events and performances from artists looking to make their mark in the live music circuit.ย

Each week, the Artists in Residency program engages some of Australiaโ€™s best artists, labels, agencies, collectives and promoters for a dynamic program thatโ€™ll shift through different genres every week.

November is focused squarely on country, presented in collaboration with Wheelhouse Agency with bands like The Wet Whistles, Taylor Moss and The Buckleys performing each Wednesday night throughout the month.

That theme shifts to โ€œalt-grl summerโ€ in December, which we can only assume skews more towards indie rock and pop with Sydneyโ€™s Carla Wehbe leading the charge along with Charlie Collins and Myma.
