Free coffee and croissants to celebrate Shuk’s new cafe in The Rocks

Next Monday, September 23, 2024, Shuk will mark the opening of their new cafe with a delicious gesture: free coffee and croissants for all. Well, for two hundred at least.

The Rocks is no stranger to reinvention, but amidst the historic cobblestones and winding laneways, a fresh scent now fills the air—baked bread, rich coffee, and a hint of cardamom. It’s coming from the corner of George Street, where Shuk’s newest cafe has opened its doors.

Next Monday, September 23, 2024, Shuk will mark its grand opening with a simple yet irresistible gesture: free coffee and croissants for all. From 7am, the first 200 visitors can snaffle a freshly brewed regular coffee and a plain croissant to kick-start their morning. A little bit of Sydney sunshine in a pastry bag.

The name “Shuk” itself holds meaning, evoking the vibrant energy of Israeli markets where the smell of fresh spices, bread, and produce mingle with the buzz of conversation. It means community, for life lived out in the open, for connection through food and shared experience. Owner Yoni Kalfus, who you might remember from his time at Cafe Mint in Surry Hills and his other massively successful Shuk locations in Elizabeth Bay, Surry Hills and North Bondi, brings that same ethos to The Rocks with his new café and bakery.

And speaking of loaves, bread is at the heart of Shuk’s menu. It’s baked fresh on-site, with everything from soft, golden challah to thick, crusty loaves designed for scooping up every last bit of shakshuka.

There’s the sweet challah with raisins, a nod to the festive table, and the Rosh Hashana honey cake, dripping with the kind of sweetness that makes you pause between bites. Every ingredient tells a tale, every meal is an invitation to sit, stay, and be part of something bigger.

So, next Monday, whether you’re a local or just passing through, take a moment to stop by for a coffee and a warm, buttery croissant.
