The lineup for the Sydney Comedy Festival was already dazzling, with international stars and Australian favourites set to take to the stages throughout the four weeks, but it’s just got even better. Australian legend, Dave Hughes will play at two venues.
Who is Dave Hughes?
If you’re new to Australian comedy, we might just be able to forgive this question. Otherwise, where have you been?! Dave Hughes has been all over the television and radio waves for years. Known for his deadpan delivery and larrikin personality, the stand-up comedian is a regular at Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
‘Hughesy’ has just started his nationwide WTF? tour. Transforming everyday mishaps into hilarious routines, gala-goers can get a sneak peek at his brand-new live show. He’ll perform at The Concourse in Chatswood on Thursday, May 1 and Factory Theatre on Saturday, May 3.
What about Comedy Gala on the Green?
Sydney Comedy Festival shared news that Hughesy would be appearing at the free Comedy Gala on the Green earlier this week, but all signs of his appearance seem to have disappeared. Don’t worry, his other two shows remain, but what happened to the gala?
It would’ve been a blinding night. Hughes was set to join Australian comedian and star of ABC Kids’ Giggle and Hoot, Jimmy Rees, British comedian and regular guest of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Taskmaster, Sara Pascoe, and America’s Got Talent star Drew Lynch on the lineup.
Aussie surrealist comedy group Aunty Donna are another of the headline acts. Warming up for their world tour later this year, the group has earned several awards over the years, including Director’s Choice at the 2016 Sydney Comedy Festival. Familiarise yourself with their work by watching Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun on Netflix.
Other comedians include Matt Okine, Nick Cody, Kemah Bob, Robobingo, Mat Ewins and Sofie Hagen.
Furnace & the Fundamentals will also perform a free concert, singing from their seemingly endless repertoire, from The Beatles to Beyonce, The Lion King to Dirty Dancingโand everything in between. Their novelty Christmas album โA Very Furnace Christmasโ debuted in the ARIA Top 40 and German radio Top 20. They’ll perform at 6:15pm, warming the crowd up before a special guest DJ takes party animals into the evening.
