Returning for its 56th year, the annual City2Surf will once again take hold over Sydney as the race that really stops the nation.
The decades-old fun run has long held great importance for Sydney and the city’s sense of community, welcoming runners of all abilities to take on a 14-kilometre track from Hyde Park in the CBD to the sunny shores of Bondi Beach. But it’s rarely ever “just a run” here, with Sydney’s street coming to life with runners, walkers, dancers, pram pushers and street entertainers.
In 2024, City2Surf was ran by just under 80,000 participants, a far cry from the 1,500 participants who were part of the very first City2Surf in 1971.

Where does the City2Surf go?
City2Surf is always going to be run the same route. You’re looking at a windy 14 kilometres trailing through the city’s east. The path starts in Hyde Park before running down William Street and through Kings Cross. It’s on to the long New South Head Road after that, ticking of Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay and Rose Bay before reaching the 2-kilometre “heartbreak hill,” which is one of the steepest inclines in Vaucluse.
After the San Francisco-grade hill, runners then continue along Old South Head Road past Dover Heights before steadying onto Military Road and finally Campbell Parade along Bondi Beach.
