Raise a glass to the past with Balmain and Rozelle’s epic Heritage Pub Trail

Balmain and Rozelle’s Heritage Pub Trail offers a unique blend of history, community, and top-notch tipple.

For those of us who like a side of culture with our day drinking, the iconic Balmain and Rozelle districts offer 19 local gems that keep the spirit of Sydney’s pub culture alive.

With a mix of heritage-listed hotels and modern craft beer havens, the trail is perfect for those keen on a leisurely pub crawl or a relaxed visit with family.

Balmain and Rozelle aren’t just trendy spots to grab a drink – they’re steeped in history.

Picture this: at its peak, this small peninsula was home to 55 pubs, each with its own colourful characters behind the bar, from tough publicans to eccentric locals.

As soon as you step into these glorious buildings, like the historic Merton Hotel, you’re taken back to a time when pubs were more than just watering holes, they were the heartbeat of the community.

New Life To Old Haunts

While many have disappeared over time, the area’s pub culture is far from gone—it’s thriving.

Balmain and Rozelle’s Heritage Pub Trail has been put together to help visitors and locals connect with the past and get a feel for the legacy of the precinct, from the cobblestone streets to the old sandstone buildings.

You’ll be sipping your shiny new craft beer or pet-nat in spots where Sydney’s early maritime workers and dockyard labourers closed out the day, but you definitely don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate the stories each pub holds,

Free Guides have an interactive itinerary for the Heritage Pub Trail with facts, quirky stories and beer recommendations at each stop and a virtual tour guide (the very enthusiastic “Stephanie”) or you can just download the trail list and make your own way.

  • Head to The Sackville, famous for its relaxed atmosphere and wide selection of beers.
  • Then, visit The Welcome Hotel, known for its excellent dining and cozy interiors.
  • Take a walk to The Riverview Hotel, with its stunning terrace and a long history dating back to the 19th century.
  • Pop in at Royal Oak Balmain, one of Balmain’s oldest drinking spots.
  • Head to The Cricketers Balmain for a sporty vibe and some laid-back charm.
  • Finish at The Bald Rock Hotel, established in 1876 and one of Sydney’s longest-standing pubs.
