Back to the Future: The Musical is one of the most popular shows to have played in London’s West End over the past few years, and was swiftly transferred to Broadway. The West End show won the Laurence Olivier Award and What’s On Stage Award for Best New Musical, among 14 other wins and nominations.
In September, it will make its Australian debut right here in Sydney, and now we have details of the stars who will bring Doc Martin, Marty McFly and co to life on stage.
Tony Award-winner Roger Bart leads the way
Marty McFly is of course the star of the classic movie, but Doc Brown would likely win the viewer’s choice award, if there was such a thing. The eccentric yet brilliant white-haired scientist is the genius creator of the time-traveling DeLorean and claims many of the notorious catchphrases: “Great Scott!” and “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads,” for example.
One of the big names starring in the Australian show is Tony Award-winning actor Roger Bart, who played the iconic role in the West End and Broadway productions.
Starring alongside him are some of Australia’s most outstanding performers, including Sydneysider Ashleigh Rubenach, whose notable performances include her role as Allison in the 2018 production of Cry-Baby, for which she won Best Female Actor at the Sydney Theatre Awards. She will star as Lorraine Baines, Marty’s mum, in Back to the Future: The Musical.
George McFly will be played by Ethan Jones, who has performed in, created and produced theatre across Australia, and Anton Berezin, a stalwart of Australian musical theatre for more than 30 years, will play Principle Strickland. No word yet on who will take the lead role of Marty McFly, but if this first announcement is anything to go by, theatregoers are in for a treat.
What can you expect from Back to the Future: The Musical?
The 1980s film trilogy is a cult classic, starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd. Over the course of the three films, we saw the teenage Marty McFly and scientist Doc Brown hop backwards and forwards in time by means of the time-travelling DeLorean. Adapted for the stage by the original film creators, the high-voltage musical is based on the first film.
Audiences will find themselves in Hill Valley where Marty finds himself transported back to 1955. Accidentally changing the course of history, he races against time to fix the present, escape the past and send himself back to the future.
The star of this show is arguably the special effects, which recreate the futuristic yet nostalgic feel that we know and love from the films. Flashing lights, strobe effects, smoke and pyrotechnics are used masterfully over the course of 2 hours 20 minutes, with the final 20 minutes being exceptionally impressive and mystifying. The cinematic feel that the creative team manage to create on stage has to be seen to be believed.
Of course, the film isn’t a musical. Apart from the scene where Marty gets on stage at the high school dance to perform Johnny B Goode, there aren’t any musical numbers. So while the storyline remains largely the same, the addition of songs marks a huge difference. How will Doc Brown sound when singing? There’s only one way to find out.
Back to the Future: The Musical will play at Sydney Lyric Theatre from September 26, 2025 and is booking until Sunday, November 30 at the time of writing.
