‘Back to the Future’ musical confirmed for Sydney Lyric Theatre

  • Back to the Future: The Musical will make its Australian debut at Sydney Lyric Theatre.
  • The award-winning musical has picked up plenty of acclaim on West End and Broadway.
  • A date has not yet been confirmed by a waitlist for tickets is already open.

After finding success on both West End and Broadway, Back to the Future: The Musical is readying its Australian debut with a run at Sydney Lyric Theatre locked in from September 2025.

Although a musical adaptation of the classic film trilogy was first floated by screenwriter Bob Gale around 20 years ago, a production didn’t emerge until 2020. Back to the Future: The Musical then spent years hopping through acclaimed runs in London and New York, picking up an Olivier Award for Best New Musical and a few Tony Award nominations in the meantime.

The show follows the exploits of Marty McFly and Doc Brown with theatrical renditions of classics like Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B Goode” and Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time.” And it seems perfect for Sydney’s unsurprising love of nostalgic stage shows, slotting into a year that already includes musical adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and Peter Pan.

Original Back to the Future composer Alan Silvestri and acclaimed songwriter Glen Ballard have worked on the music and lyrics for the show, while Gale himself has penned the book. The results have clearly struck a chord with fans, breaking box office records at London’s Adelphi Theatre and picking up glowing reviews, most citing the shows seamless blend of stunning visuals, catchy songs and heartfelt storytelling.

No exact date has been confirmed for the show’s debut at Sydney Lyric Theatre but we do know it’ll be arriving in September 2025. A ticket waitlist is already open.
