Are we in the midst of an accommodation revolution in Sydney?

The Grand National Hotel in Paddington has already impressed with Josh and Julie Niland’s boutique accommodation offering of 14 heritage hotel rooms above one of the world’s best restaurants, Saint Peter. Now another culinary-driven hotel has opened up, this time over on Newtown’s Australia Street.

Billed as “Newtown’s first luxury foodie stay,” Australia Street Suites is the feather-in-the-cap for Paisano & Daughter’s ambitious “Australia Street Project,” which has steadily converted a row of four heritage shopfronts into a collection of distinctive restaurants, ten years on from the original Continental Deli.

Those four restaurants have now all opened, turning this side of the leafy strip into four restaurants:

  • Flora (Vegetarian and Vegan)
  • Mister Grotto (Seafood)
  • Osteria Mucca (Italian)
  • Continental Deli (European)
Flora is now one of four restaurants that make up the Australia Street Project (photo supplied).

Australia Street Suites comprises just three design-forward two-bedroom apartments so guests can fully immersive themselves in the hospitality group’s offerings. For the past four years, Paisano & Daughters has been working to convert these heritage spaces into modern suites that sleep four each and can be booked individually or together.

Each of the suites come with full kitchens, oversized living areas and spa-style bathrooms. All three are slightly different from each other and distinguished by name (Flora, MG and Mucca), but they all have copious natural light in common, as well as high-end amenities including custom furniture by Melbourne-based Jardan, comfy AH Beard beds and Leif body products. Artwork by NSW locals Toni Clark and Kylie Murrell help with the lived-in feeling.

Although staying in the historic H. May building doesn’t come with room service (just yet, anyway), guests can pre-order arrival specials at some of the restaurants. That comes in handy, whether you want oysters and Champagne from Mister Grotto or cheese and charcuterie from Continental Deli (or their famous Mar-tinny).
